Frequently Asked Questions

Glazing

What is glazing and the different types you can choose from?

Single, Double or Triple glazing in glass. The types of glass we offer can range from toughened, clear, obscured (mainly used for bathrooms), satin or decorative/stained glass. The Solidor Glass Brochure on the Doors Services page outlines an extensive range with images to show the different patterns and designs of the glass. Visit our showroom to view the samples we can show you on the different types of glazing offered.

What is an EPC rating?

Energy Performance Certificate Rating is a certificate that is allocated to your home based on the energy efficiency of your windows and doors. The more energy efficient your windows/doors, the higher the rating (A) and lowers the cost you should pay in energy bills. EPC ranges from A-G (G being least efficient) and demonstrated in the diagram on our ‘Why Us’ page. All our double or triple glazing products are A rated.

What is a U-value?

This relates to the thermal performance and efficiency of the materials. Also known as thermal transmittance, is the rate of transfer of heat through a structure divided by the difference in temperature across that structure. The better-insulated a structure is, the lower the U-value will be, these range from 0-1.7.

Do we need planning permission for our installation/renovation project to be carried out?

It is the customers responsibility to obtain planning permission and building control (any building work carried out must comply with regulations, though some types of building work are exempt from building regs so won’t need an application) approval if needed for their build project or installation works to be carried out. If you need further information please visit the Mole Valley website, if you need to submit an application for planning then you need to do this on their portal, there is guidance also on this website to help with submitting the application form. You will likely need an architect to help with submitting drawings, if you need us to help with this, we use local architects and happy to provide any information for questions on this. You may also need to obtain a Certificate of Lawfulness which if we help source for you is around £120. Please ensure these are approved before contract and order stage to avoid any issues with the installations further down the line.

What certifications do you have?

We are Certass registered, as per the logo member number on our homepage, we also have a profile on Certass that can be viewed by clicking here. By looking on the Certass website it can offer more information on the background and reassurance of the quality standards we adhere to when work is carried out. Certificates are sent to customers via Certass after work is completed for compliance, these need to be stored in a safe place, especially if you ever plan to sell your home and will be needed as part of the Legal documents. Certass also audit us regularly to ensure we comply with any changes to legislation or policies and that our work is to the standard Certass certifies at.

We are also TrustMark Registered, our profile can be accessed by clicking on the following link here. The emphasis on a Trust Mark registered company has been demonstrated by the recent Green Homes Grant (GHG) Scheme launched by the government in Sept 2020, to ensure high quality standards are maintained from installers and companies used to carry the work out.

We are currently in the process of becoming PAS 2030 compliant – this accreditation became relevant to become apart of being eligible for the GHG, it also means we will have a Quality Management System in place, therefore will enhance our standards that we offer to customers. We will be audited annually to provide our continuous updated compliance to the accreditation.

We are registered with Checkatrade for local customers to find us through our excellent, reliable and trustworthy reviews and score. To become a Checkatrade member we provided relevant information, certificates and had an audit to demonstrate we are successful in meeting the criteria to be included on their site. We are also registered with Surrey Trading Standards Approved.

What warranties and insurance policies are offered with the installations you carry out?

For residential installations, a 10 Year Warranty and insurance backed guarantee is offered with QANW – further details on this can be found on the Why Us page in the Insurance Backed Guarantee video.

We also provide QANW Warranty for commercial installations but the insurance backed guarantee may differ so please get in touch at the quote stage to confirm for your commercial project or products.

We cannot provide any warranties or Certass certification for Fire Doors, however we can install these and provide a Compliance Certificate.

How long is your quote turnaround?
We aim to get quotes back to you between 1-3 working days, however, this would also depend on the supplier(s) response and turnaround for costs for us to include in the quote.
How long are your lead times?

It depends on the product and supplier. These range from as quickly as 24 hours for all Origin products to 4-6 weeks for most windows and doors. Unless they are bespoke such as Timber which take slightly longer to be made. Please note lead times are only when the product gets delivered, we then need to schedule in your installation date which is usually within 1-2 weeks from delivery date.

Windows

What are the different types of windows you offer?
The range of windows we offer to supply and install are; casement, bay, sliding sash and fixed. Please view our range of windows on the services page to find out the difference in details between each of these.
What is the difference in cost?
It depends on the material, PVCu are at the lower end of the scale and would meet a smaller size budget, Aluminium is higher quality material so a the higher end of the scale and Residence Collection would sit in the middle as PVCu material but has different design and structure as Timber look alike, whereas Timber is likely to be more bespoke so would depend on the size and amount of windows but also towards the higher end of the scale.
How secure are the window products?
All windows come with a multi point locking system and toughened glass, making them very secure.
Which windows are the most energy efficient?
PVCu or Aluminium are A+ energy rating, which is the highest on the scale ensuring a very energy efficient product and most importantly, lower bills due to less heat loss through the windows.
Can you supply windows with acoustic and thermal efficiency?
Yes, we can get the U-value and relevant details from the suppliers to ensure they are acoustic or thermally efficient for your project.
Can you help with repairs to the windows after installation?
As all window installations come with a QANW 10 year insurance backed guarantee, we would certainly be happy to revisit if there are any issues with the products.
Would replacement windows increase the value of your home?
Definitely! Not only are you likely to be increasing the EPC rating as they would be more energy efficient, there are an extensive range of designs and colours to choose from in the materials we offer that would instantly update your home to either a traditional or modern look.
What is the lifespan of window products?
Around 30 years, panes of glass may need to be replaced, as these can get blown from longevity, PVCu frames are likely to need replacing sooner than an aluminium product due to material strength. Timber frames as long as treated and maintained properly can last around 15 year until needing to be replaced.

Doors

What are the key differences between Sliding and Bi-Folding doors?
Bi-Folding doors open all the way across allowing much more space and complete access from the inside to outside. Sliding doors will have one panel whereby there will be glass so not as much space projected from the adjoining room to the outside but still allowing plenty of light in.
What are the differences in materials you offer for front doors?

Composite – most popular material to choose, we use Solidor as our supplier who provide an online ‘Door Designer’ that can be found on our Doors page in the Services, you can create and gain inspiration on the wide selection of colours, styles, designs, glass and hardware choices. Feel free to email us a screen shot of your desired door image and we can get a quote price over to you for it.

Aluminium – high quality doors and look very modern, extremely secure, and stylish.

PVCU – energy efficient, budget friendly and secure.

Timber – these are bespoke and can be created to exactly how you would like the door to look, we have some timber door examples on our front door images to give you some inspiration. High quality hardwood is also very secure and a beautiful look for our front entrance.

Can I get internal blinds for bi-folding doors?
Yes, we have samples of these in our showroom and can be installed for that added privacy or help to shut out any light on the very sunny days.
Can you install cat flaps into our door?
Yes, whether it be PVCu or the glass itself we are happy to install cat flaps for you.

Conservatories

What types of conservatories do you offer?

We install PVCU, Aluminium or Residence Collection Conservatories, example images of these can viewed on the Services under Conservatories.

What types of roofs do you offer for conservatories?
We can do glass usually with solar control glass which can come in 4 different colour shades, we have a sample of these in our showroom. We also can do solid tiled roofs which are slate tiles that come in 3 different colours.
What is the difference between a Skyroom and Orangery?
A Skyroom offers a larger lantern and roof space for plenty more light to come into the room, whereas an Orangery is a smaller area of glass on the conservatory roof.
Can you get internal blinds for lantern roofs?
Yes these can be pull string or electric, please get in touch for more information or if you would like a quote for these.

Garden Rooms

What designs do you offer for your Garden Rooms?
These are truly bespoke to how you would like your garden room to look, we are currently are working on a brochure for the popular sizes and designs we have carried out, but we can create these completely to how you would like it.
