Frequently Asked Questions
Glazing
What is glazing and the different types you can choose from?
Single, Double or Triple glazing in glass. The types of glass we offer can range from toughened, clear, obscured (mainly used for bathrooms), satin or decorative/stained glass. The Solidor Glass Brochure on the Doors Services page outlines an extensive range with images to show the different patterns and designs of the glass. Visit our showroom to view the samples we can show you on the different types of glazing offered.
What is an EPC rating?
Energy Performance Certificate Rating is a certificate that is allocated to your home based on the energy efficiency of your windows and doors. The more energy efficient your windows/doors, the higher the rating (A) and lowers the cost you should pay in energy bills. EPC ranges from A-G (G being least efficient) and demonstrated in the diagram on our ‘Why Us’ page. All our double or triple glazing products are A rated.
What is a U-value?
This relates to the thermal performance and efficiency of the materials. Also known as thermal transmittance, is the rate of transfer of heat through a structure divided by the difference in temperature across that structure. The better-insulated a structure is, the lower the U-value will be, these range from 0-1.7.
Do we need planning permission for our installation/renovation project to be carried out?
It is the customers responsibility to obtain planning permission and building control (any building work carried out must comply with regulations, though some types of building work are exempt from building regs so won’t need an application) approval if needed for their build project or installation works to be carried out. If you need further information please visit the Mole Valley website, if you need to submit an application for planning then you need to do this on their portal, there is guidance also on this website to help with submitting the application form. You will likely need an architect to help with submitting drawings, if you need us to help with this, we use local architects and happy to provide any information for questions on this. You may also need to obtain a Certificate of Lawfulness which if we help source for you is around £120. Please ensure these are approved before contract and order stage to avoid any issues with the installations further down the line.

We are Certass registered, as per the logo member number on our homepage, we also have a profile on Certass that can be viewed by clicking here. By looking on the Certass website it can offer more information on the background and reassurance of the quality standards we adhere to when work is carried out. Certificates are sent to customers via Certass after work is completed for compliance, these need to be stored in a safe place, especially if you ever plan to sell your home and will be needed as part of the Legal documents. Certass also audit us regularly to ensure we comply with any changes to legislation or policies and that our work is to the standard Certass certifies at.
We are also TrustMark Registered, our profile can be accessed by clicking on the following link here. The emphasis on a Trust Mark registered company has been demonstrated by the recent Green Homes Grant (GHG) Scheme launched by the government in Sept 2020, to ensure high quality standards are maintained from installers and companies used to carry the work out.
We are currently in the process of becoming PAS 2030 compliant – this accreditation became relevant to become apart of being eligible for the GHG, it also means we will have a Quality Management System in place, therefore will enhance our standards that we offer to customers. We will be audited annually to provide our continuous updated compliance to the accreditation.
We are registered with Checkatrade for local customers to find us through our excellent, reliable and trustworthy reviews and score. To become a Checkatrade member we provided relevant information, certificates and had an audit to demonstrate we are successful in meeting the criteria to be included on their site. We are also registered with Surrey Trading Standards Approved.
What warranties and insurance policies are offered with the installations you carry out?
For residential installations, a 10 Year Warranty and insurance backed guarantee is offered with QANW – further details on this can be found on the Why Us page in the Insurance Backed Guarantee video.
We also provide QANW Warranty for commercial installations but the insurance backed guarantee may differ so please get in touch at the quote stage to confirm for your commercial project or products.
We cannot provide any warranties or Certass certification for Fire Doors, however we can install these and provide a Compliance Certificate.
